between lens and language

i have observed how some people believe you can only be one thing. a photographer. a writer. a painter. as if creativity needs to be boxed into categories, as if our own intuition and vision must choose a single form.

ive never felt this way. for me, photogrphy and writing are two sides of the same language, once captures the way light falls across a wall, the texture woven in fabric. the other captures the feelings those moments bring, a quiet poetry that sits behind the image.

when i hold my camera, i’m not just framing a moment. i am listening for the story, when i write, i’m not just placing words together, i am painting with memory, colour, feeling. both are acts of attention. both are ways of preserving something fleeting, something fragile, before it drifts away.

photography has taught me to see the world in moments, in detail, in silence. writing allows me to piece these moments together into something whole, something alive. meaningful. together allowing me to honour the beauty I encounter. whether its rhythm of life, the craftsmanship of an artisans hand, or the ancient stories carried through a marketplace.

i am sarah jessica marie burns, I am a photographer and a writer. not one or the other, but both. always both and so much more, just as you are.
